Finished: Life is Strange, Mirror's Edge Catalyst
Playing: Life is Strange: Before the Storm
I finished Life is Strange, and I have mixed feelings about it. I can't remember the last time that I played such a thought-provoking game, when I wasn't playing it I was thinking about it. It's essentially a mystery thriller that kept me wanting to know what was going on, and what was going to happen next. Being an episodic game that's the way that it's designed - to keep you wanting to find out more and not being able to stop playing until you do. At least it did for me, because I was sucked into the story and characters from the start.
It's a modern take on point and click adventure games that unfortunately similar to Telltale games focuses more on storytelling and choice making, and less on actual gameplay like key items and environment puzzles. It includes more of those elements than Telltale games, but still not as much as I would like. It also includes a time rewind mechanic that adds another gameplay element, and it's used well for the most part allowing you to change decisions that you've made and to solve puzzles.
A lot of the game involves slowly walking around somewhat small environments examining everything, talking with characters and making dialog choices that impact how the story plays out. The decisions that you make impact the story, but the problem is that none of them impact the actual ending of the game. No matter what decisions that you make throughout the game, the ending is scripted with two choices that you get regardless of the decisions that you made. And this is my main problem with the game, the entire final episode including the scripted ending selection and the ending that I got were really weak compared to the previous four episodes. There's so much buildup and a twist that I didn't see coming, but it's all pretty much deflated in the final episode and I was left extremely unsatisfied when the credits rolled. So much wasn't explained, so much didn't make sense and the ending that I got was really short to the point where I thought that it was being left open for a sequel but the sequel is going to be a completely new story with new characters.
I really liked the story and characters and I liked how dark that it all was, even though it was still a little on the tame side compared to books and movies that deal with the same subject matter. But it did push the envelope more than most games do, and I found that refreshing. In fact, I found the entire game refreshing because it was something different and didn't play it overly safe like games tend to do. Unfortunately, it all kind of went downhill at the end which is disappointing considering how good that it was up until then.
Shenmue I & II comes out next week and I'm really looking forward to it because I'm a big fan of the games, and it will be nice to play them again after so long.
