izzy, I had a similar experience with the one Ecco game I played (on PS2, I think?). The concept sounded cool and I love dolphins/oceans... but the gameplay was meh at best.
As for FFI and II... It's probably good my old brain is crumbling so I don't remember a lot of annoyances, but I truly enjoyed the OG when I first played it on NES (I still have the maps that came with it along with some I drew by hand), and I played I and II when they came out on PSP and had a great time with both. Again, can't recall much but I have a little happy fuzzy feeling when I think back.
